Does acupuncture hurt?
No, acupuncture generally does not hurt.  The acupuncture needles are made of stainless steel and are very slender (as thin as a strand of hair).  Most people do not even feel the needles going in, or they may feel a very small prick.  Following the insertion of the needles you may feel a sensation of tingling, numbness, ache, radiating warmth, or heaviness. This is the energy moving.  Many people find the treatments very relaxing and will sometimes even nap during them.  You may feel more energetic in the days following the treatment.

What is acupuncture?
Over five thousand years ago, the Chinese discovered the complex relationship between stimulating a point on the skin to influence the body’s harmony and balance. The ancient Chinese had a very advanced scientific understanding of the body and how it works, but they defined it in terms and symbols not known to those in the western world. The acupuncture theory of the ancient Chinese takes into account their deep understanding of the lymphatic, circulatory, vascular, and nervous systems.

Is acupuncture safe?
As long as it is performed by a competent practitioner, acupuncture is extremely safe. Acupuncturists are required to use disposable needles that are discarded after one use.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?
Some insurance companies will cover acupuncture services. Please contact your insurance company representative to determine if coverage will be provided for your treatments. This way you are completely sure of your coverage. We do not bill insurance companies. However, we will gladly give you a receipt for all of your treatments so you can submit them to your insurance company for reimbursement according to their policy. If you plan to seek reimbursement, please discuss this with us so that the appropriate Diagnostic Codes can be assigned.

What are my payment options?
Cash and check, Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal are accepted forms of payment.

Payment is due at the time of service. Although cash and checks are preferred; payments can be made in the office through PayPal® which accepts all major credit cards.

How many treatments will I need?
Each person is unique and the number of treatments varies.  Some individuals will experience results after their first visit, while others will require a longer series of treatment.  This depends on the severity and chronic nature of the complaint.  Overall, you should expect to see some results within 6-8 visits and should notice some overall improvement with your condition after each treatment. Musculo-skeletal injuries may need to be seen on a more frequent basis during the beginning phase of treatment.

Can Western and Chinese Medicine work together?
Yes. Modern medical wisdom suggests that we combine what is useful from each modality. Very frequently the two approaches can be combined to the patient’s greater benefit. If you are under a doctor’s care, be sure to advise your practitioner of your course of Western medical treatment including any medications, surgeries or implants. This will allow your practitioner to best support you in your course of treatment. Supporting women in fertility and reproductive health is of particular interest to us at the Arbor Center for Acupuncture. We use Chinese medicine alone, or in combination with fertility promoting medications, and assisted reproductive techniques to increase chances of conception and improve each woman’s gynecological health. (Studies show that acupuncture treatments in conjunction with IVF can improve success rates by 40%.)
